new 42kHz mp3

i’m going to be uploading a new mp3 of 42kHz this afternoon, so if it’s not available for a little while, that’s the reason why. hopefully this one wil be a bit better quality :-) thanks for your patience & thanks for your interest in this mix. i think this is the most downloads & streams for one mix i’ve ever seen in a given month. sam

from totems to hip hop

i just found this! i had completely forgotten that Ishmael Reed planned to use some of the poetry that came out of his creative writing classes…. Wow! he published a poem of mine in his anthology: From Totems to Hip Hop: Poetry Across the Americas, 1900-2002. totems to hiphopi took my poetry class with him my last semester as an undergraduate…in the spring of ‘96. thank you, Ishmael. thank you for being the down-to-earth, up-front, bad-ass teacher that you are. more on the anthology: Cynthia Kane “From Totems to Hip-Hop…” – Tribes Reviews

aww…thanks, scott!

Was just on Scott Manley’s site (aka DJ S&M), and came across this sweet little tidbit. Sam gets everywhere and is a great example of all that’s good in the SF music scene. (DJ S&M dot Com) thanks, Scott–i appreciate it! check out Scott’s mixes…this man’s been spinning for quite a number of years & he set our decks on fire with a blazing spontaneous set on Keri’s birthday! :-)

sf weekly write-up

SF Weekly | See/Be Seen | Sisterhood Is Powerful A lot of DJs want to be a part of the Sister SF crew: The women’s DJ collective has the star power of Polywog and Forest Green and a reputation for working hard to be more than just eye candy behind the turntables. As a result, there are limits on who gets called a Sister. For women, it means proving you’ve got talent and integrity. For men, it means wearing a dress. Once a year, the gals of Sister invite brothers to perform with them — but only in drag. “Dragnet: Dude Looks Like A Lady” begins at 10 p.m. at Sublounge — Hiya Swanhuyser

au revoir, belfunk…

this past weekend it dawned on me that i’m done with Belfunk. yup, i’ve had my time with it. and i never thought it would come to this point. but i finally said goodbye to one of my favorite tracks of all time. it had been a Sam-staple for many years–almost as long as i’ve been spinning records. almost every CD i’ve recorded, every set i’ve played, has included my favorite Sasha track & i finally parted with it. sound a bit dramatic? perhaps. but the point is, i feel like my sound has come to a new level & when i look back at the years it has taken me to get to this point, i can honestly say that they are defined by that track. it was strange to grab it the other night & not feel the need to spin it. i can say so much more about it. like how i think that Sasha’s double X-Pander EP is one of the best things to have ever happened to electronic music. and how i think that his new album absolutely pales in comparison to those four tracks. and how i find it odd that so few people still remembered that oevre of his, in looking forward to his long-awaited EP (that Airdrawn Dagger business….) thank you, Sasha, for bringing us the X-Pander, for bringing us Belfunk, and for giving me the track that has brought me this far along in my enjoyment of music. i look forward to being able to listen to it more frequently now. :-) sam

Newcastle, the most delicious elixir of my life, now has a section on their website where people can send in suggestions for their bottle-cap slogans! Boy, did i get bored of reading the same six messages OVER and OVER and OVER again…:

scott carrelli owns!

Halloween awww yeah….that was so much fun! just got back from the Sublounge and has a BLAST! Played at Maria & Becky’s Hall-o ween party, complete with jello shots, lots of decorations & costumes. Valerie Sparks and Gabe Macias had a great tag-team session upstairs, followed up by Sunil. i played a set downstairs, which was followed up by a slamming set of 8Ball & then Scott Carrelli finished off the night with authority. Thank you, Scott–you rule! It was great to see everyone there: thank you Melyss, and Ken, and Matt G., and Mark, and everyone else. Paul, of course, thank you for coming out & showing your support as you always do–and thank you for making my costume in less than two hours before show-time… i had the brilliant idea of attaching a bunch of brake-pads to myself & wearing a tiara. well, Paul made that happen…and, thus, i was: The Queen of Brakes.

Thank you, Mark! to go back to Carrelli: he graciously accepted to be my tag-teaming partner for Sister’s November 21st Drag-party! Scott and i will be battling it out on the decks in drag. Don’t miss it–it promises to be a fantastic night: Dude Looks Like a Lady! Happy Halloween! sam
