S P R I N G F U R O R Are you sick to your stomach of maypoles? Chocolate-bunny-eared out? So very over people telling you how cool it is that workers won an eight-hour workday? Well, the Noodle Factory feels for you. It’s trying to take it all back to the bawdy days of Beltane with a lo-o-ong night of Mayhem! “I feel like we’re in a really chaotic time,” says organizer Justin Katz, “and I think a lot of people feel sort of out of control. I wanted to put together an over-the-top night, a night of engaging, interactive, creative chaos. Mayhem in that way, that we can all get into it and be a part of it. We don’t have to be in charge of what’s going in, but it’ll be a damn good time.” In the circus and performing-arts arenas, there will be bedlam by the likes of that infamous one-woman freak show, GWAR’s Slymenstra Hymen, and her fire-dancing, -eating, and -breathing cohort, Camanda Galactica; puppeteer and perv Willy the Clown; and the Cotton Candy Cabaret. The musical portion of the evening includes Fiyawata playing dub, hip-hop, and Afro-Latin soul, and DJs Samira, Jay T Tempura and Louis Chude-Sokei. Dr. Abacus, a campy jazz quintet for whom Katz plays bass, will be accompanied by performances by the Fou Fou Ha! Dancing Girls and Piffy, who Katz describes as “a throwback from a Heavy Metal Parking Lot scene, combining Swedish bells and stripping.” Occupying the event’s neither/nor slot will be Jamie Kennedy and his fellow spoken-word assassins, the Suicide Kings. And, if that’s not enough pandemonium for you, visual business will be provided by artists Catalyse, Karen Lewis, Lauren Ari, and Nina, among others. The whole shindig will be emceed by Acid Cabaret’s Partyball, accompanied by pianist Allison Lovejoy. Partyball was a natural for Mayhem!, says Katz. Acid Cabaret is “an environment where some stuff is excellent, really high quality, and some of it, you can’t believe somebody’s doing that in public.” Mayhem! happens Saturday night at the Noodle Factory, 1255 26th St., Oakland from 9 p.m. till whenever. Admission costs $10-$13 (the cheaper price is for those “dressed for mayhem”), and this is a 21-and up affair. Visit www.freelanceexpert.org/mayhem BY STEFANIE KALEM East Bay Express
